Tooth whitening

Causes

Several causes can be at the origin of a change of color of the teeth. First of all, the teeth can be covered with an accumulation of dental plaque and tartar. These deposits are coloured if a person frequently drinks coffee, tea, red wine, or if it smokes.

Treatment

Under the supervision of the dentist, it is possible to bleach its teeth. Before the treatment, the dentist takes a print of the teeth to manufacture a stone model. This model makes it possible to manufacture a plastic gutter adapting perfectly to the teeth of the patient in question. This gutter is used to retain the small quantity of hydrogen peroxide gel of a concentration of approximately 10% that it is necessary to apply to bleach the teeth. The patient will have to carry the gutter during the day or the night, according to her preference. The treatment lasts approximately two weeks or until the time necessary to obtain satisfactory results if colouring is tough. The side effects can be sensitivity of the teeth and/or an irritation of the gums. The sensitivity of the teeth usually disappears after the treatments.

Crowns, veneers and bridges

A crown can be used for broken teeth, teeth having a root canal or to cover teeth that have undergone large obturations.

The crown covers a tooth which is present in mouth. The bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth and it takes anchoring on the teeth next to the missing teeth. The fixed bridge and the crown are retained via cement. The crown and the bridge can be made out of porcelain, metal alloy with a porcelain covering (porcelain fused metal) or out of gold alloy only.

Root canal treatment

The root canal treatment is sometimes the only means of saving a tooth dedicated to be extracted. It can also be necessary at the time of major restorations, such as deep decays, or following a traumatism, for example a broken tooth.

The root canal treatment consists in removing infected, broken or died pulp. Dental pulp is the soft tissue contained in the cavity (pulp chamber) of a tooth and which contains the nerves and the blood vessels. Under local anaesthesia, the dentist creates a small opening in the tooth to reach the canal where the damaged pulp is.

Removal of wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth can cause acute (sudden) problems, chronic (ongoing) problems, or no problems at all. Removing the teeth before symptoms develop can prevent or reduce future complications. Dental x-rays can help your dentist find existing problems. X-rays may also help show whether your wisdom teeth are likely to cause problems in the future. But it’s not always clear whether your wisdom teeth will give you trouble.

If one or more of your wisdom teeth are likely to cause problems, your surgeon may recommend removal. This can relieve your symptoms and protect your dental health. In some cases, you may be advised to wait or to try other treatments first.

Early removal is often recommended. Your surgeon may advise removing the wisdom teeth now, even if you have no symptoms. This is because wisdom teeth roots mature and become more firmly anchored to the bone as you age. This makes removal more difficult. It also increases the risk of complications. And people heal more slowly as they grow older.

Graft and gum treatment

In addition to the decay, the diseases of the gums or periodontal diseases constitute the principal dental problem in adults and elderly people. It is an inflamation of the gums caused by the accumulation of dental plaque and tartar. The dental plaque is a bacterial film invisible and sticking which accumulates on the teeth. It is produced by a combination of various bacteria, pieces of food and saliva. The greatest concentration of plaque is found between the teeth and under the edge of the gums. With time, the plaque is transformed into tartar, a granulous and hard substance which must be removed regularly.

The two principal signs of the beginning of periodontal diseases, or gingivitis, are a bleeding of the gums during brushing and a bad breath. The gums can be also red, swollen and sensitive to touch. An untreated gingivitis can be transformed into periodontitis. In this stage, the bone which supports the teeth starts to resorb. Without treatment, the teeth become mobile and will have to be extracted. The periodontal diseases are the principal cause of the loss of teeth in adults. Nearly 75% of adults suffer from problems from the gums to various degrees during their life. The people who carry prostheses are not safe from such diseases. The brushing of teeth or protheses, the daily use of dental silk and regular visits to the dentist remain the best means of preventing these diseases.

The periodontal treatment aims at restoring a healthy gums. It requires usually scaling, that is to say a removal of the plaque and tartar accumulated on teeth, and a flattening of the roots, a technique aiming at making smooth the root of the teeth after the remains were removed. In serious cases, it can be necessary to practise surgical operations to remove the tartar placed in pockets which were formed between the gums and the teeth.

Complete and partial prosthesis

The prosthesis is an apparatus to replace the missing teeth in the mouth.

One uses a complete prosthesis, often named complete denture, when there is complete loss of teeth. A partial prosthesis will be used when only some teeth are missing in the mouth. The apparatus is fixed using hook on natural and healthy teeth.

It should be noted that with time, depression of the gums and deformation of the face can occur after several years of complete missing teeth. It is thus important to check the adjustment of your denture. It should not move when chewing or when laughing.

Dental implant

The placement of a dental implant is a procedure that allows you to replace one or more missing teeth and even a complete edentation.

Made of in titanium, it is a fully biocompatible and strong material. This is the equivalent of tooth's root well anchored in the jaw which will prevent the deterioration of the bone, therefore the ageing of the face.

Resistant, comfortable, durable and stable, these are all advantages of a dental implant that will enable you to eat whatever you have desired. As your natural teeth, dental implant facilitates the mastication and digestion of food.

No more need of prosthesis which become uncomfortable and cause the resorption of the bone. By adding a porcelain crown on the implant, you will get the esthetic of your smile back and improve your self-confidence.
